Government authorizes purchase of ship to strengthen Brava and Fogo maritime connection
On Wednesday, in the Council of Ministers, the government approved resolution 136/2025, which authorizes the acquisition of a new cargo and passenger ship to ensure the Brava/Fogo/Brava maritime connection.
The measure responds to the operational difficulties experienced in recent years and reinforces the importance of this route, which is considered an essential public service for the population and for regional development.
The maritime connection between the two islands is the main means of mobility for people, the circulation of products and the supply of fundamental goods, as well as playing a crucial role in the evacuation of patients, the flow of agricultural and fishing production, tourism and the maintenance of economic, social and territorial cohesion, says the resolution published today in the Official Bulletin.
"The continuity of this maritime link is essential to guarantee the integration of local communities and their immense diaspora, the inter-island mobility of people, the functioning of essential public services, the evacuation of patients, the flow of agricultural and fishing production, tourism, and support for the economic activities that sustain regional development", justifies the same source.
In view of the operational weaknesses that have affected the route, the government has decided to go ahead with the acquisition of a RORO PAX or equivalent cargo and passenger ship, with the appropriate technical characteristics to guarantee safe, efficient and regular travel.
The aim is to ensure predictable, permanent transportation capable of boosting a new socio-economic dynamic, especially on the island of Brava, which is facing limitations in its domestic market.
The resolution establishes that the ship must comply with all national and international maritime safety standards, with the Ministry of the Sea, in conjunction with the Ministries of Finance and Tourism and Transport, being responsible for defining the specifications.
The procurement process will comply with public procurement legislation, guaranteeing transparency and competition and is intended to guarantee the continuity and regularity of the public transport service between the two islands, strengthen the mobility of the population and the supply of essential goods, among other things.
The evaluation of the proposals will be carried out by a Technical Committee coordinated by Enapor, while funding will be provided by the State Budget, which may include credit lines or other admissible sources.
The management and operation of the new ship will be carried out through a concession by public tender, reinforcing the professionalization and efficiency of the service.
The ministries involved will also have to monitor the entire implementation of the resolution and report periodically to the Council of Ministers.
With this decision, the government reaffirms its commitment to ensuring dignified, safe and continuous mobility between Brava and Fogo, taking a decisive step towards strengthening regional integration and improving the living conditions of local communities and the diaspora.
